How exercise generation works

After your lesson audio is transcribed and analysed, SpeakRecap passes the lesson content to an AI model with specific instructions about exercise design. The model generates exercises that use vocabulary, sentence structures, and topics from your specific conversation - not generic content from a textbook.

The generation process runs in two steps: first a planning pass that decides which skill areas to target, then a generation pass that writes each exercise. This two-step approach produces more consistent results than generating exercises in a single pass.

Eight exercise types

SpeakRecap generates across eight distinct types, spread to cover different skill areas:

• Multiple choice - vocabulary or comprehension questions with four options.
• Fill in the blank (cloze test) - sentences from the lesson with key words removed. One of the most widely-used ESL assessment formats, generated automatically from your actual lesson content.
• Speaking / pronunciation - students record themselves saying target phrases; pronunciation is scored automatically.
• Word box - students drag or select words to complete sentences.
• Matching - connect words to definitions or sentence halves.
• Sentence ordering - rearrange scrambled words into correct sentences.
• Interpretation reading - a short passage followed by comprehension and inference questions.

Teacher review and one-click publish

Nothing reaches a student without your approval. After generation, every exercise appears in your lesson dashboard with a full editor. You can change question text, swap out answer choices, adjust difficulty, delete exercises that don't fit, or add instructions. When you're satisfied, a single "Publish All" button makes the complete set available in the student's homework portal.

Graduated hints for students

Progress visible to you

Every submission is logged. You can see which exercises a student completed, their scores, how many attempts they needed, and which hints they used.
